Club AGM finalised!

ClubAGM Finalised!

We are now pleased to inform the membership that that details of our AGM have been finalised. In a change to past tradition we have decided to move the meeting from Wednesday evening to a Saturday afternoon. The meeting will be held on Saturday 18th of February commencing at 13.00hrs in the Tibbie Shiels Inn. All verified members are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be available at the meeting.

Membership update!

The window for renewals will close at midnight on Tuesday and any member not having renewed by then will have to join the waiting list!  Things look very much like there will be three or four spaces available on Wednesday morning. Now rather than blindly sending in forms and cheques those desirous of obtaining membership should call 07980350031 to check availability and book your membership.

As I have previously mentioned in light of the scurrilous allegations re massive fraud made by glove puppet Mr Xxxxx our treasurer will reveal the true state of the club at our AGM.

Photo 02 it got quite wild around 10.00am.

Quality goods?

During the course of my new volunteer work I met an angler who lives locally but has never visited local tackle shop. Naturally I asked how he sources his tackle and he mentioned a website I had never heard of - Wish. It is apparently an American based outfit who advertise products made in China.   Now there was a time when made in China signified inferior goods but that is changing rapidly!

I bought a product which was a large socket with hundreds of sprung stainless steel pins inside which due to those pins claims to grip any misshapen bolt head, and you know what it does! I tried it on a burred external Torx headed bolt and voila, it removed it no problem! The cost was £2.00 plus £1.00 P&P.  Now they have loads of fishing stuff like 1000 metres of braid for £14.00 including shipping.  Multi jointed Pike lures for £4.00 all in. My colleague bought the braid in 60lbs BS and he is delighted with it. I bought a jointed Pike lure and once I have tried it I will reveal all here. Click the link and have a look they have everything!

Special relationship!

Its been headline news all week the visit by Theresa May to meet the new president of the USA. There was an embarrassing rush by the posh squad to be the first to meet the loudmouth buffoon who is arguably the most powerful man in the world!  It was obvious by her demeanour that the vicars daughter was immediately relegated to the status of lap dog!

Let's make no mistake here Trump holds all the cards May has but crumbs to offer him! She left her talks holding hands with Trump but all she achieved was a sentence from Trump that the special relationship continues. No hard and fast trade deals or even a definite commitment to such deals! The word of Donald Trump counts for nothing!

She in fact achieved nothing other than confirming her status as a weak British politician! Astoundingly the next day in Turkey after Trump introduced his appalling Muslim ban she was asked three times if she approved of this action she only answered on the third attempt with a bland non committal statement later followed by a weak condemnation issued by a faceless bureaucrat from Downing Street!!

She is a vicar’s daughter and acted like one, completely out of her depth there was no sign of the strong politician she professes to be! Mrs May is turning out to be even weaker and more clueless than bungling supremo Lord Snooty! In her negotiations with Turkey she was again a subservient handmaiden! She should expect an intense and prolonged backlash from sensible people all over the country! There is a special relationship with the United States of America and it goes like this – they issue directives and we comply without question, yes Brexit looks better every day NOT!

National holocaust day!

National holocaust day has yet again come and gone and it is imperative that this horrific event carried out by the brutal Boche is never forgotten! The kind of extremism that kick started the Boche can now be seen in it's infancy in America as president Trump tries to implement hateful and morally corrupt policies! We have not had a good history as custodians of the planet let’s try and learn from our countless mistakes!

A wee bird told me yesterday that Lord Snooty had been in the area engaging in the “sport” of shooting pheasants. I’m not surprised his visit was kept quiet, here we have the biggest bungler in the history of British politics and the man who through crass ineptitude left the country in an interminable mess would surely have aroused some kind of demonstration, he is keeping a low profile and believe me that’s good for everyone!

Now the dust has settled!

Photo 01 - John Garske cradle's a super 18lbs Pike!

Now the dust has settled!

As we have already stated last year was the worst year in the clubs history where a wee drifter wafted into the area and burrowed his way into the club then tried to destabilise our beloved club but failed spectacularly! We are grateful to the two riparian owners who have barred him from fishing for a lifetime! So where does that leave us now? Well having swept the above fellow into the trash can we find ourselves in a very good position indeed!

Speaking with our members what has become crystal clear is that they are welcoming of the permit checks being carried out by our bailiff Jenny. You will note we have not been using the term loch keeper. After the title was sullied by the last incumbent we felt that the term should be held back and given a rest period. Yes universally our members feel that once again there is order and the certainty that all is being done to protect our fishing!

On our membership I would say this – never before have we had so many anglers filled with enthusiasm in pursuit of our fish! Similarly the number of anglers stepping forward to help the club out with maintenance and repair is truly astonishing! More than ever this club feels like a proper club! Our financial position is the strongest it has ever been with good reserves for a rainy day.

The fishing in the recent past has been very good with those that put the time in reaping the rewards in fish caught! There is joy when a leviathan is landed but there is equal joy when a fish of lesser weight is banked. There is also joy when the loch wins and no fish are banked, simply to be there surrounded by breathtaking beauty is enough to recharge our members!

The future looks bright as no longer is the threat of fishery ruining engines running about every day a possibility! Our membership is fiercely protective of our fishing and it is clear will take any steps to preserve this situation! They say that for an alcoholic to recover he must sink to the very lowest point before embarking on the road to recovery and so it has been with our club. We have experienced the most shameful situation in our history but we have emerged from the other side stronger and wiser, and that can only benefit the club!

Club membership!

The time to renew memberships is rapidly shortening with the end of the month being the cut off date. The five memberships that arrived over the weekend will be processed today and sent out tomorrow. Please note there are a number of people on the waiting list and any spaces left by non renewing members will be offered to them. Please also note last year's blue membership cards will not be accepted as evidence of membership after the end of January! The date of our AGM will be published next week.

This weeks photos!

Up first is club member John Garske who fished the much neglected Loch o the Lowes and came up trumps! Yes a lovely fish of eighteen pounds coming to the net. Well done John it is indeed a fine fish and is testament to the potential of the wee loch! Photo 02 shows one half of the chuckle brothers Stewart Grieve with a long and lithe thirteen pound one ounce fish which came at 21.00hrs on Friday. Top bombing Stewart, yet another to add to your increasing tally for the year, oh and goan send the bottom bit o the photae Stewart!! Photo 03 shows the view from the Bay of Plenty with summer and winter in the same shot. the temperature differential was quite marked as a spell in the sun really warmed you up!

The wider world in my view!

Say goodbye to fairness and equity!

I watched with interest on Friday night as pompous twit Donald Chump Trump was installed as president of the USA. We now have the American equivalent of Kim Jong-Un and his bizarre ideas! Most commentators prior to the event predicted a massive change of course away from the inflammatory tripe he spouted during the election race! Let's get one thing clear here he did not win the election a corrupt Hillary Clinton lost it!

So it turned out to be more of the same with a slight change of emphasis playing down the most outrageous aspects of policy if you could call his ramblings policy! Never have there been so many protests on the election of an American president, women, ethnic minorities and even men all over the world simply stunned by his bombastic stone age rumblings!

Our own dithering leader Theresa May is cock a hoop at the prospect of being the first foreign leader to be invited to meet the new “president”! Trump however shows predictable style by choosing the most embattled and weak leader currently in office! Oh indeed he will play up to the gallery and throw her a few titbits to calm the right wingers but his protectionist stance of America first will ensure that only the crumbs on the table will fall into her lap!

The election of Donald Trump is a disaster for every country clearly shown by countless demonstrations all over the world! There is now a huge weight on the shoulders of Republican politicians in America to mitigate and negate the clearly huge excesses of Trumps warped thinking! A failure to do so will affect each and every one of us in a negative way!

Let's bomb randomly!

Another scandal revealed this week was that a trident missile (unarmed) headed off towards the USA way off its intended course! What comes out of this is the lies and deception employed by governments to achieve their own ends! To think that an armed nuclear missile could instead of crippling an enemy do the same to an ally is a truly sobering thought! If these things cannot be aimed with certainty then they are of no use whatsoever! Get rid of them!

Our AGM 2016!

Photo 01 - An absolutely splendid view by Sandy Robertson.

Our AGM 2016!

We will finalise the date of our delayed AGM next week and below we append the items for discussion received so far!

(1)  The action to be taken against Mr Xxxxx regarding the theft of club property. What we know he holds are 4 two way radios kindly donated to the club by a club member. One club permit book, one club pay in book, the membership database, the clubs high powered spotlight and my Galaxy Ace phone which I donated to the club. We should also take note that never again will he be able to fish our waters following the lifetime ban imposed on him by two riparian owners!

(2) Our financial position following the scurrilous allegations of massive fraud made by Mr Xxxxx. Our treasurer will lay bare our accounts and leave no doubt this allegation was just another lie from a proven fantasist and liar!

(3) Ideas for improvement of the fishing and/or the club facilities.

(4) The date for membership renewals, does it need to be changed so that payment due does not clash with the festive period.

(5) The use of the club engines, the way forward not Mr Xxxxxs fishery ruining philosophy. We need a frank discussion regarding servicing/repair and how we would manage them.

(6) The heavy Pike competition prizes currently the trophy for one year plus £20.00, do we need to increase this.

(7) The election of the club committee

(8) A.O.C.B

The usual standing orders will apply. If any member has a topic they would like to table for discussion please make sure this reaches me 14 days before the meeting.

Photo 02 - Sandy shows our battered Lowes boat!

The process is moving along smoothly with a steady flow of renewals coming in which is great. When you compare our angling subscription to that of a golf club for instance your £35.00 gives you a mammoth bag of enjoyment for next to nothing! Couple that with our policy of free boats to members and the possibility of a virtually free petrol engine (supply own petrol) after our AGM and the deal is sealed, club membership is a bargain!  By the end of the month we will know if we have any spaces to take on new members we will publish availability here.

This week’s photos!

We often get photographers setting up on the banks of the loch looking for the ideal combination of factors that delivers a memorable photo. I had a blether with one such chap (Sandy Robertson) yesterday and he sent the photos off to us. Thanks Sandy they are indeed fine photos!

From our recommended dealer!

Its a new year but thankfully the same good old savings are still coming from our recommended dealer Mike at Fishers! If you are looking fora new twist on your fly selection click the link to see a vibrant range of hackles to brighten up your flies -

More NHS woes!

Last week I mentioned the NHS and the perilous position it is in especially in England. This week things have not improved primarily to the indifference of Theresa May yes she who talks compassion but actually does nothing! Yes this woman who is turning out to be a bigger duffer than even Lord Snooty denies any crisis simply saying GPs must work longer hours to relieve pressure on A&E departments!

The great worry would be if she thought anyone believed this! She is treating the people of England as a bunch of fools! The head of the NHS in England exposed her a liar and an out of touch fool! Anyone who has followed this shameful series of events knows the primary and ever present problem is a huge shortfall in funding! The scenario this government will portray will be parry and dodge for a couple of weeks until the weight of opinion becomes so great then capitulate and provide emergency funding! This emergency funding whilst welcome will fall far short of what is required!

We are more fortunate in Scotland as our health service has been better managed and funded. There is no room for complacency however until we can seek full independence extra funds from the newly devolved borrowing powers must be committed to funding this most important service, nothing less will do!

Introduce by Bevan the NHS has treated every one of us to a very high standard excluding recent times. The NHS and social care network is crumbling in England and yet no one really seems to be trying to address this! The political establishment need to address this with great urgency! The party in power when this beneficent giant falls will spend a very long time in the political backwoods and rightly so!

Hard labour, but the club benefits!

Photo 01 - Our future sport!

Hard labour, but the club benefits!

Yesterday I met up with Brian Fairgrieve, Gordon McClurg and trusty companion Meg with the aim of collecting shingle to improve the muddy path from the boat house to the boats!  First job head over to the sculptures (rather what’s left of them) and collect the pebbles we need. Thirty odd buckets at between 30 – 35kgs a bucket soon has the sweat pouring, at least for me it did!

Photo 02 - He's smiling again, note the tail.

Then back off to the boat house and transport the buckets to the muddy path job done. At last it was time for a breather and a Forsyth’s of Peebles pie, absolutely delicious, thanks Gordon!  Time to set off again and fill the buckets and transport another full load which the big Arran’s handled without protest. We spread the pebbles over the path and soon it was job done!

Photo 03 - A fine Lowes thirteen pounder caught by Craig Hunter.

Highlight of the day for me was travelling with Meg, she is a delightful creature filled with curiosity and playfulness and a clear liking for pies. I was more than happy to share a couple of Forsyth's best with her in return for her company and a face wash. Over at the sculptures she displayed the most amazing turn of speed chasing after imaginary rabbits at a speed that I am sure would embarrass a Cheetah, cracking dog!

Photo 04 - Eventually they stop for a breather Brian & Gordon!

Anyway the path is done and it was bloody hard work but will need topping up now and then, so we are asking members if you will be passing the sculptures in your boat why not take a spade and a couple of buckets (in the boathouse) and fill them as it would only take minutes and that will give us a reserve nearby for topping up and repair of certain areas as required!

Photo 05 - Meg, complete with lifejacket about to set off!

Thanks are due to Brian and Gordon it was hard labour but well worth it and thanks to Meg for her company and the entertainment provided – Priceless!

Photo 06 - A heap of scrap!

This week’s photos!

The first photo was engineered and taken by Davy Wilson and  Stuart Durham. On Thursday night they noted fish near the reeds and wondered what species they were and with the aid of head torches and a landing net managed to catch one and what a beautiful and vibrant specimen it was. It’s the smallest Pike I have ever seen!

Photo 07 - The completed path!

Photo 02 was down to Davie Wilson and he reckons it was around 6-7lbs. Note the ragged tail which would indicate a previous skirmish! Photo 03 is a thirteen pounder caught by Craig Hunter who this year is specifically targeting the loch o the Lowes.  Photo 04 shows Brian and Gordon yesterday taking a breather I thought they were never going to stop! Photo 05 shows the star of the show yesterday Meg looking to head off on a play hunt! Photo 06 shows various pieces of ironmongery lying around from the mess that is the sculptures! Whatever this pile of junk was meant to represent has now disappeared and what is left is an unsightly mess! Photo 07 shows the completed path.

We received an enquiry from the Times newspaper this week asking if we could name a day when lots of boats would be on the loch for a photo shoot they are planning mid 2017. I gave them the contact details of the sailing club so they can advise when a busy regatta is being staged.

Membership renewals!

Membership renewals are coming in at a steady rate and we will deal with them as quickly as we can. Some members were concerned that their cheques had not been cashed yet their cards had been sent out. Again this is due to Mr Xxxxx who has in his possession the clubs pay in book for depositing money in our club bank account!

The theft of this book is causing us a few problems and only our treasurer Elliot Fraser in Motherwell has the other pay in book. We are trying to obtain a new one but members should not worry as cheques will be cashed as fast as we can! If you come across Mr Xxxxx ask him to explain his childish actions!

We met with Karen from Riskinhope and to thank her for alerting us to the fact our Lowes boat had made a bid for freedom. We presented her with a nice box of chocs and a bottle of sherry for the sure to come freezing nights ahead!

The wider world in my view!

Here we are again!

You could not have failed to notice this week countless warnings from health authorities all over the country that once again our beloved health service is about to give way under the (predictable) winter pressure! Granted the situation is much worse in England than it is here in Scotland but even here in the Borders warnings have been issued to the public to think carefully before going to A&E.

Up to date health care is dependent on implementing the findings of valid research, using the latest medications and technical innovations. Of course there is much more to it than just the above but what can clearly be seen is that following the above formula vast amounts of money would be required to adopt this approach.

But every year without fail we hear the government of the day saying that they have pushed the boat out and injected a further sum of money to tackle the problems experienced. The response from health professionals and service users however is also always the same – It is not enough! It is merely a sticking plaster on a haemorrhaging wound!

Growing older brings with it a degree of cynicism as indeed we have seen it all before. We wonder why our politicians are unable to address this quandary! It must be clear to these people who run our lives that the population do indeed want the very best in health care and that the current way they run our country will not under any circumstances deliver this!

It must be crystal clear that we need to re-evaluate the way our country is governed! Can we afford to send millions in humanitarian aid to countries that have nuclear weapons or fund overseas pop groups who sing about inequality regarding women! Can we afford to keep the wee waster next door who will not work and is a parasite on our society? Do we need to spend £billions on nuclear arms?

The bottom line is that we do not pay enough to have the kind of health service we want to have! The needs to be a root and branch evaluation of how we fund the health service! Nowadays many other countries have a health service that eclipses ours including many ex eastern bloc countries! How can they do it and we cannot?

The current lot seem only able to make a complete hash of the Brexit carry on, all else cast aside! It must dawn on these people at some point, the trigger however will come from the people when finally we have had enough of the interminable bungling! That day needs to approach very quickly!
